Free after school sports

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post

Settle a question for me. I   live in an upscale community with award winning schools. We pay taxes up the wazoo (but not as bad as Long Island or New Jersey or Mass would)  My kids do after school sports and they are NEVER free.  There is a charge for all of them (waived if you can show need).

How many of you live in an area (wealthy or poor) where after school sports are offered for FREE to everyone?

Where do you live?

Quoting Anonymous:

Booster club, ticket sales, refreshment stands pay for the equipment & such.
The coaches are volunteers. (except for high school sports, that's just conditions of their job.)
It's 50/50.
Even The three private schools offer free sports.

Everythings free here, .you are responsible for the shoes/cleets/etc.

But otherwise free.

Football, basketball, cheer, soccer, baseball, you name it.

Same with afterschool & rec department here.

How is it funded? And are you in an affluent or poorer area? Who pays the coaches and for the fields and the lights and such?

DD's running club, that was sponsored by teachers, was free except for the race and t-shirt expense.

I am in Massachusetts, and upscale town, and we pay for everything.  The prices through the town are reasonable compared to private clubs.

So they pay for the equipment to? Like which equipment?

Those few things pay for all the kids equipment, uniforms, to keep the fields nice, tournaments, travel expenses, things like opening day and closing day functions...all of that? And the things I've forgotten?

Do you mean school sponsored sports teams? Like varsity basketball, etc? Those are free, even at my son's private school (except crew). Activities for the little kids carry a fee though. My son is wrestling right now. It was $225 for and hour and a half twice a week for eight weeks. But they mostly charge the fee because these are little kids and its child care. My son is 5.

We live in an upscale area and I know the cost for the school's middle school baseball team is about $50.

Rec teams costs at least double that usually.
