I just saw on the news that NC is trying to pass a new divorce bill. It would require couples to go through 2 years (longer if the couple has children) of mandatory couples counseling before they could get divorced. As of now the law is that a couple must be legally separated for 1 year before a divorce can be
finalized.

Thoughts on
the new bill and if it passes?

Added Info: I've posted everything they
said about it. I don't know if they will
have special considerations for things such as abuse, cheating, etc. They didn't say who would have to pay for the counseling, but I'm assuming it would be the couple. I'll update if I see any new info on it.

Surely there are exemptions for abuse situations, right?

2 yrs seems to long in some situations.

Fuck that. I live here, and the 1 year waiting period was bad enough when I got divorced.

It will never pass.

What about adultery? They surely can't force a couple to stay together when one has outright cheated on the other.

 ..

I think couple counseling is GREAT.  But it only works if both WANT to do it and are willing to try..  Forcing them into it will accomplish nothing at all.

I think that's a bit controlling

I mean we all go into marriage hoping it's a forever thing, but shit happens and people grow apart, become different people or one is an abusive psycho.

I don't think the government should have any say in the fact

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA that's funny and stupid as shit. My aunt just went through a year of hell because of the one-year law. Her ex-husband was abusive and horrible for over 20 years. I couldn't imagine how horrible it would have been for her had she been forced to go through counseling with that asshole.

I would vote a big fat NO on that any day, and will do so if it ends up going up for vote.

Well I don't know if it would help, people will just be legally married for 2 years and show up. I was just thinking though that people who can get married need to start respecting it more. It's ridiculous how many times some people get divorced.
