BOx dyes are the devil. Lol And the roots are probably lighter because it was your virgin hair.
most of the time when doing your hair at home- you want to go no more then two shades lighter or darker then your own color. that is unless you really want a big change
I had that happen to me. Had to bleach my hair and re-dye it. No fun.

Get a box of Color Oops! and wash out the last dye. Deep condition your hair, give it a week to calm down, and go to Sally's Beauty Supply and get the good stuff. Sounds like you've got medium to dark brown natural hair color, and need to use 40V creme developer and a high-lift color (either an ash or violet base). My natural color is medium-dark mouse brown, pulls red, and going blonde is very difficult. I use Ion Color Brilliance when I go blonde, the 12V high lift blonde. Works very well, doesn't kill my hair.
