Only taking the Bible literally when it is convenient to YOU

Posted by   + Show Post

Sooo....gay marriage is wrong, well, because the Bible says so of course.

But doesn't the Bible also say that premarital sex is wrong? And that women should be submissive to their husbands?

Most people I know, Christians of course, do not follow these particular parts of the Bible. Usually the answer is "well, I don't think that was meant to be taken literally" or "things were different back then".

So why is it you only follow the marriage laws of the Bible that are convenient for you but when gays want to marry, all of a sudden we MUST take the Bible word for word and NO NO NO, gay people cannot get married and you will push that on them citing your religion for your reasons?

But you excuse yourself of following any part of the Bible you don't think is ok and come up with ridiculous excuses that for whatever reason can only be applied to the versus you don't want to be forced to follow? What's up with that?

According to the Jesus, if a man divorces his wife, (except for some conditional that your Christian denominations do not agree upon), and marries another woman, he is committing adultry. According to Jesus, a remarriage is not a valid marriage. God defined marriage as one man and one woman for life, right? But our society, and most parts of the world have "redefined" marriage to include participants who have been married and divorced. Why don't I see anyone standing around protesting divorced people getting remarried, and trying to make this illegal?

Furthermore, why do so many Christian churches allow people to get married in their church, who have been divorced? Why aren't they telling these people that they are committing adultry, and to go back to their original spouse?

Quoting TranquilMind:

Why does it need to be illegal?  It's already wrong, and those who know that and understand the rationale already protect themselves.

This case isn't about making something that is wrong illegal.

It's about not redefinining marriage to mean something it has never meant nor was intended to mean.

Quoting LilyofPhilly:

You know what is hypocritical? I don't see any Christians protesting in Washington (or anywhere else) and trying to make sex outside of marriage illegal.

Quoting TranquilMind:

Submit to ONE ANOTHER, actually.  It's not the kingly man lording it over his slave woman.

Of course premarital sex is wrong.  Sex outside of marriage is wrong for very good reasons, like our physical protection from diseases.  One can ignore that at his peril.

If you know Christians who are contending that their unmarried sex is fine, but gay people shouldn't be having sex, well, you are right...they are hypocritical.

You don't have the right to the KIND of equality that is based on your religion. Just like people can't go out in the street and sacrafice a lamb. In our country, we are not suppose to mix governmnet and religion. We do not make laws based on what it says in the Bible. Christians are allowed the same type of equality in our government as every other religion and non-religion that exists in our country.

Quoting starlight91:

as I stated before, I am NOT against gay marriage, I am for Christians having equality too

Quoting spotsmom:

Right. I might speed, but I don't have one set of rules for some people, and another set for myself. If I speed and get caught, I'll get a ticket, and so will anyone else. But (some) Christians want to have pre-marital sex (I've NEVER known a Christian, male or female, who waited 'til marriage), not submit to their husbands, eat at Red Lobster as much as they want and break many other commandments regularly and do so with impunity, but they want to LEGALLY restrict the righs of others to go against the Bible. Seriously, was Paul Ryan a virgin when married? Sarah Palin? Michelle Bachman? Okay...she probably was, but only because that gay husband of hers wouldn't have sex with her until he absolutely had to.

It's fine if Christians think homosexuality is an "abomination." But homosexuality is not condemned to any greater in the Bible to any greater degree than eating shellfish. so if they are going to ban gay marriage, then they better get to banning Red Lobster, too. Otherwise, stop trying to deny rights to a group people out of prejudice alone, because if you are not willing to follow EVERY part of the Bible (making your daughter marry her rapist, anyone?) to the literal letter, then your denial of gay rights IS nothing more than prejudice, and the Bible is nothing more than a convenient excuse. It's no different than when Christians tried to keep interaicial marriage illegal and cited the Bible as reason.

Quoting starlight91:

So everyone is being human,

dont tell me youve never driven past the speed limit, its wrong but you still did it. Just like every human being does.

If your opinions and beliefs are based in any RELIGION, then no, you do not have the right to stand up for them IN GOVERNMENT ISSUES. Moral issues and laws are two seperate things and should stay that way.

Quoting Anonymous:

So, what you are saying is:  I can have those opinions and beliefs as long as I don't stand up for them?  I should just allow things to go on that go against my beliefs.  However, those that are for gay marriage should be able to protest and spread the word with no opposition.......

Furthermore-how about you believe what you believe and make sure you don't try to push it on anyone.  "Sit back with your opinion only living it in your personal life, I don't see anything wrong with that....."

Quoting lovinmama411:

You don't have to agree with gay marriage. I'm not gay, so guess what? I will never participate in a gay marriage. But that doesn't mean I have the right to force my opinion upon others in ways of denying them rights of legal marriage. That is my main issue. If you don't believe in gay marriage, that is your right and I respect that. BUT don't try forcing that on others when most of you don't even follow the book you preach. It's just an excuse to try to control the lives of others and quite sickening. If you don't go down and vote against gay marriage or try and stop gay marriage from happening, and you just sit back with your opinion only living it in your personal life, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Quoting Anonymous:

Well, we shall agree to disagree.  I have argued this till I have been blue in the face!  If I don't agree with gay marriage then I am close-minded and such.....which is pretty hypocritical being that if you are allowed to have an opinion, so am I.....

Quoting lovinmama411:

Apples and oranges hun. You can't say that all pro-choicers are also for gay rights, two seperate issues with no connection. I'll tell you exactly where it ends. Marriage = Consenting Adults. Then end.

Quoting Anonymous:

I'm an idiot?  So, unborn children are not consenting to being murdered but people push for that......

Where does it end.  Marriage=man+woman.  And I do think women should submit to their husbands......God has a wonderful plan, doesn't He?

Quoting lovinmama411:

You're an idiot. You are comparing consenting ADULTS to helpless animals and children who don't have the mental capacity to fit into the "consenting adults" category. That would be called a crime.

Quoting Anonymous:

So, should people be allowed to marry their neighbor's cat?  I mean, neither can make children and if they are both willing then why not?

Quoting delilahsmom1177:

Sharing an opinion is one thing. Trying to keep somethin illegal is quite another.

Quoting Anonymous:

But you are allowed to pass laws that go against what I believe......why am I not allowed to share my opinion just because it's different than yours?  I believe passing gay marriage into acceptance is disgusting and demoralizing.......so, I feel you are spreading some not so good things, too.  You cannot tell me that it's ok to have opinions but I have to keep them to myself and then tout that gay marriage is ok-that makes you a hypocrite.  If you have the right to share your opinion, so do I.....

Quoting delilahsmom1177:

You can not make others believe what you believe and by trying to keep marrage equality illegal os just spreading hate and making others believe what you believe.

I don't know what's up with that. It is hypocritical. There are parts of the church who DO follow these other mandates, we are just a diminishing number.

Yep thats right Christians are allowed the same type of equality as they CAN go vote with thier views of gay marriage and /or their views on religion.

Lets face it, Christians are not the only religion that has some against gay marriage, Muslims probably do not believe in Gay marriage as their woman can not even show their faces..  Are you now telling Muslims too that they MUST check their religion at the door?
