yes.  But If I don't open mail, DH will literally NEVER touch it.

If that were true, correction officers who open inmate mail would be in trouble

Technically, yes it is if he says you can't. I tend to not open things that look important, I text him and let him know who sent it and most of the time he says to go ahead and open it. However, things that have to do with insurance, bills, and other time related things that I know are coming I just go ahead and open.

An inmate looses that privacy and right when they are put in jail.

Technically it is but I doubt my husband is calling to have me arrested for opening the five refinancing offers he receives in the mail every day.

Yes it is because your name is not on it. Why would he care?? My DH opens mine and I open his. It's not a big deal for us.

Meaning her reply was incorrect. It is NOT illegal to open mail that's not yours. Case in point, inmates.

I always assumed it was illegal to open anyone's mail but your own. So yes.
