Is it ok to give this too my dog?

My mom has always given her dogs meat bones straight from the butcher. Since I got my little Rat Terrier 5 months ago she has sent them for Roxy. I posted a pic of her cuddling with one tonight (she LOVES her bones) and a friend who works for a vet, not a tech (no schooling) just cleans kennels and things, said they were bad for her. I know I can google, and I will, but I just wondered what others thought? Do you give your dog bones?

I give them compressed bones. Otherwise no they can splinter and bam instant vet bill. Especially with little dogs. I'd be more cautious

They can have cow bones.

Chicken and pork bones can splinter and hurt their insides.

This is what I was going to say.. But I am no vet either, I'd call her vet in the morning just to double check.  :)

Its better not to give any bones just to be safe especially with small dogs

I give her beef or ham bones. No chick or pork chop/steak. That is what I was always taught. My friend is saying if they are raw she can get sick. I have never heard that as I thought dogs were meant to eat raw food in the wild so there insides were made for it.

I always thought it was "cooked" bones that are the hazard to pets? I give my dog the rawhide chews to beat up.

Grrr really? Man she would hate me. Its her favorite thing in the world. I have had all sized of dogs growing up and mom always gave them bones. No one ever had an issue. Why is it a problem?

Mom gets them from the butcher in a Wal-Mart sack. Frozen. She takes the smaller ones out for Roxy, her dog is a Great Pyrenees so he like the big ones any way, I keep them frozen till I am going to give them too her. She honestly likes them best straight out of the freezer. The one she has tonight is from a cooked ham steak.
