At almost 6 and 8 my kids can and are expected to keep their rooms picked up. They dont. I told them yesterday to go in and not leave till they were clean. 2 hrs later they didnt pick up a thing. Now ive given them an hour to pick up and anything on the floor or not put away is getting bagged up (the room could be clean in 15 min if they tried). im sick of this and if they cant keep their rooms clean i told them they obviously have too much stuff and i will take care of that problem for them. Anyone try something similar? How did it work?

Both of my boys (4 and 11) have at one point had all their toys bagged up and had to earn them back for not cleaning their rooms. It worked, and my kids are pretty good about keeping clean now.

My mother did that to us our whole lives, we never had anything, it gave us emotional issues when it comes to, "our things".

I always tell dd if she can't pick up I'll get a trashbag and pick up. Never had to do it. My dad did it to me and only kept the stuff away from me for a week. If it happened again I'd lose it permanently. Never happened I kept it clean.

My girls we once had to bag everything up and they had to earn them back. It worked for them.

That's exactly what I do. But my boys are 3. They've been picking up after themselves for almost 2 years now, maybe longer (one will be 4 the end of the month, the other will be 4 in August) so if they don't pick up their toys I tell them I'm throwing them away and they go in the shed for about a month
