Living off the grid for 1 year. Could you?

Ok, our friends went 1 year 95% off the grid. In other words, they lived without electricity, provided natural gas, cable, phone, etc... They have a 16yo son. The water is from a hand pump on the house. Heat is wood from dead trees in wind breaks. The reason that it wasn't 100% was gas for an emergency or distance travel vehicle. they biked everywhere, used solar power, free-ranged chickens and eggs. For internet, rode in to McDonalds for a hot spot connection or when lucky, would pick up someone's wifi. Solar water heated, LED lights that were solar, bigger solar panel to charge 12 v batteries that goes to a power inverter. The house they built was made from earth bags and looks a lot like a hobbits house It's actually very cool. Everything is rechargeable or wind up. They have an exercise bike that is hooked up to a car generator so on cloudy days they can ride bike and have power too.

Nope. And I wouldn't want to. That doesn't sound very fun (to do by choice) at all.

I COULD do it. I would not WANT to at this point. I have a toddler and that would make things a lot more difficult, but I would be capable.

Yes. Awesome adventure and experience.

That is what we would like to do here, go completely off grid.

As of now I couldn't, but that's something I'd like to do.

We've stayed over and it was just like being a kid again.  Camping out almost.  Eating kabobs from the firepit, kids talking to each other rather than playing on the computer or games, the sounds of outdoors... It would be cool to do during the spring, summer and fall but the winter, not so much.
