My friend and I have similar incomes/situations. We are self employed in industries that have taken a hit over the past few years and have husbands that have lost their jobs. I pay $600 dollars a month for health insurance. For the past few years it has gone on my credit card between times I get paid. She doesn't pay health insurance.
A few months ago her husband got sick, went to the emergency room and she got the bill for $12,000. She was surprised. I was not (that is why I pay my insurance with money I don't have).
Well she just texted me and she qualified for the state plan (so would I--I make less than her) and they wiped the bill clean.
So would texting her back and saying "Good for you! I guess I am an idiot for paying my insurance all these years" or "Congratulations! Welcome to the system" be appropriate?
Or am I really a fool for paying my insurance with money I don't have and that is what the system is for.
Eta. She lives in a 400K home, has three cars, her kid is in after school activities, has all the toys...xbox, wii, kinect, nice bike etc. etc.
ETA: Thanks ladies! You've really made me see the light! I am going to put in my application for government assistance right now. Thanks so much! And to think I have paid 12,000 for insurance since my dh lost his job out of my own savings when I could have been on assistance is just stupid of me. Thanks again!
