Why don't people give away puppies anymore?

I'm looking for a puppy for the family, but I can't believe how much I have to spend to buy one and THEN also pay for all of the ridiculous vet bills on top of it. Even at a shelter, it looks like I'll be spending a minimum of $400 dollars. I find it sad that people have made breeding puppies into such a profitable industry.

Where do you live, that shelters charge that much? Our first shelter dog cost $45 and our second cost $40.

My local shelter has a fee of $125 and they provide all first shots and a certificate for neutering.

And do you have to go through an absurd background check on top of it? I'm seriously about to get in my car and start driving to somewhere where people are not ridiculous about dogs to adopt one. I'm in the North East.

Shelters are cheap. If you can't afford to buy a dog, you can't afford a dog. My dog was $125 from the shelter, then over $4K his first few months for vet bills, meds and surgery.

it's more to prevent dogs being used as bait in fighting rings.  People won't do that to a dog they had to pay for.  Good breeders don't make a ton of money.  My dad bred search, rescue, and police dogs for about 10 years and he almost never turned profit.  It's too expensive to house, feed, and vet dogs properly.

Are you sure you're not looking at rescues? They usually have background checks and higher prices.

Re home... Re homing fee.  But you should go to a shelter. We are looking to get my son a dog.  A small sized dog....  We will probably go to a shelter, so I can at least save one that is knocking on deaths door.

One of the shelters here, keeps an animal for a week, then euthanize them....
