How does everyone here know...?

...What grade level their child is reading at? Every time someone posts about their child being smart, everyone starts trotting out IQ scores and "my six year old reads at a sixth grade reading level".

How do all these people know these statistics? How do they even calculate that?

My children have been tested because we do online schooling with them.

My son is in kindergarten and his teacher told me he reads at a 2nd grade level. Not sure how they test for it just what I was told.

That's what gets me! I am a teacher, and I am sadly uninformed about this magical equation that calculates what grade level a child is reading at. And are we just talking about reading, or does comprehension play a part too?

Our school tests kids' comprehension skills and gives them a percentile score, but I've never heard of it being converted to grade level

LMAO! Because my daughters teacher told me. They use leveled readers and continually test throughout the school year. When they tested her at the beginning of the school year, she was reading on a 4th grade level, at her last parent teacher conference her teacher told us she was up at a 6th grade level.

(My DD is 7 and reading at a 6th grade level, comprehending at a late 4th- early 5th grade level)

What state do you teach in? So I know never to move there.

So they took a test online and it told them what grade level they're reading at? What's the purpose of the test and score?
