Do a lot of people have this open door policy?

I don't get it.

People who show up to my door unannounced will be sent on their merry way. At dinner time, I won't even answer the door.

I guess if I did have a kid over I would urge them to go home come dinner, but that's never happened, because kids don't wander by themselves where I live.  Is that normal?

I don't mind when my mom shows up. But otherwise I want a call first. And if I don't answer the phone, its as good as an 'f-off!', lol! I like my space and I like to plan ahead. Dh is the same way, just not as good at planning.

If you're hungry I'll feed you. Just don't take advantage and make it a habit.

Yes I'm not feeding random neighbor kids. We are military so just think of how many possible moochers there would be... Uhm... no, they can eat at their own house.

Ppl who show up at ppl houses like that are considered to be moochers/free loaders. Personally I think ppl like that are pathetic

I'm really happy to share meals, especially with other kids. Sometimes other kids aren't fed well at home, so I don't mind at all. of course it can be an inconvenience to have people show up unannounced...but for us doesn't happen often. Kids are always welcome.

I don't answer the door, period, ever, to anyone I'm not expecting.

You are welcome to show up but if I am eating I won't open the door and I won't feed you. If you call 1st then maybe I'll make you a plate because I was aware of your arrival beforehand.

If a friend stops by unexpectedly, I will offer to make something, but I would not just offer food to all the neighborhood kids who happen to smell it cooking.

No way. It'd be different if I bought extra stuff just for people, but where i'm from you don't just walk up and ask for food.. You can walk up and strike conversation up and probably will be invited to have some, but most say no.
