Making Meal Plans is Stupid!

Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post

I plan my meals. A month at a time actually. This way I can go to the store and know EXACTLY what I need to buy and when to use it. The weekly plans get hung on the fridge so I know what to cook DD for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Well, DS just started on Gerber 1st foods, about a month ago. He's up to five different foods (3 veggies, two fruits) and actually eats A LOT. His doctor said though, that since he shows that he's no longer hungry by pushing away the spoon there's nothing to be worried about and if that means feed him two containers, then so be it. He's not overweight so that's not an issue. Well my mom was over yesterday when I pulled ALL of the baby food out of the cupboard, and started stacking it and writing out a baby meal plan for next month so that when I go to the store next Saturday, I will know exactly how many of each to buy. I have over $50 worth of baby food that I bought at the beginning of the month (yes, I planned what I was going to feed him and when to introduce what). Apparently it's disgusting that I have that much food and it's CRAZY and STUPID to buy that much baby food at once. When I told her I do that with all my other food (minus things that I need fresh, like Milk or fruits and veggies) she got this appalled look on her face, raised her hands in the air and yelled "I raised a freaking idiot" as she walked out the door. Is this really as stupid as she says it is or is she overreacting?

Meal plans are not my style, but I do not think they are stupid.

No! This sounds like a great idea and is your way of keeping organization in your life. It's great to have too because it keeps you sane, especially with kids! I have 2 whole cabinets dedicated to my DD, who is 8 months old. One is for cans of formula and the other is for her baby food, which I organize into rows by type. DH and I recently lost our food stamps and can no longer afford to shop for the whole month anymore. Instead we'll have to do it for 2 weeks at a time. I have thought about doing the list deal to try to save some money. Especially since I started allowing "healthy foods" only in my house, which are a tad more expensive.

If the wind will not serve, take to the oars.

If you're able to do all that and still put money away into savings on military pay then you're doing it right. You are a great money manager and that comes from great planning. Good job momma and forget what your mom says. You're fine.

She's overreacting. If its not sittin in your cupboard it's sitting on the shelf at the store.

It's normal. I'm used to it. You should hear some of the other names I've been called by her in my lifetime. Idiot so far is the nicest.

Your Mom called you an idiot?  That's mean.  Meal plans are awesome.  They save you time AND money.

I think it is so much easier to meal plan! I wish I could do it for the whole month...I just do a week at a time. However, I wouldn't stock up on that much baby food. Both my kiddos suddenly refused to eat baby food, and would only eat soft solids. With my first, I had juststocked up, and ended up giving away about $50 worth of food. With my second I didn't keep so much aonce, so I didn't have as much to give away. Also, if he's eating so much purees, have you tried soft solids?

She IS over-reacting.   You are right to do what you are doing.

I did the exact same thing- usually I did the plans and shopping for a week or so.  Saves time!!! saves MONEY..... saves sanity,   because you have the plan right there.... makes running the house so so much easier.

I do weekly menus with monthly ideas so if I see something on sale I get it or alter my future plan.It is beyond me what your mom was upset about...sounds like you have an organized plan.I waste much less with a plan plus why would she care ...she over reacted

Does it make squishy sounds when you mush up the food? Seriously, I tried making him banana's once and the sound about made me puke. I don't know why but the weridest things have been making my stomach turn lately.
