Above all else, marry a decent human being.  

After they've already taken the plunge - communicate!!!!  a lot!!!  and not about the kids!!

Put each other first, even after you have kids. A happy, healthy marriage equals happy healthy kids. Communicate and be each others best friends.

Stay friends, and keep your sense if humor. Don't let your relationship with each other fall by the way side when life steps in. You may have to rethink your definition of romance, but don't give up on romance all together.
