Called the police on my FIL

Last night our extended family came over for a family party, and my FIL had way too much to drink. While my husband had run down to the corner store to get some ice, my FIL  was out the door, with his keys, before anyone realized. My BILs went out to try to get him out of the car, but because he already had the engine running, was belted in and only opened the window a crack, they couldn't stop him.

Everyone shook their heads but seemed to shrug it off. Their house is a 20 minute drive away, and I was appalled. I said I was calling the police and everyone told me not to, but I did anyway because drunk driving is seriously unacceptable.

FIL was arrested and had a BAC of .19. My husband is on my side, but the rest of the family has been calling all morning to get angry with me, saying you shouldn't call the police on family. Apparently he is going to have to pay upwards of $1000+ in fines and will lose his license for a year, which will cost him his job. I stand by what I did.

What do you think?

I wouldn't call on my FIL

We don't get the police involved in anything with our family

You would be surprised with what we handle ourselves.

Someone would have followed him home in my family.

I think that fil should not have driven drunk if he didn't want to get arrested

At least they stopped him before he killed someone.  I say you did the right thing.

What good would that have done? He was still behind the wheel and he could still cause an accident.

Yeah, because following him home would've prevented an accident *rolls eyes*

OP- you did nothing wrong. I am against drinking and driving. He deserves every punishment he gets.

He could have ended up killing someone. There is never an excuse for drunk driving.

There's more than one way to their house, and my BILs had run out without shoes or keys to get him to stop. After he pulled off, there was no way anyone was going to catch up to him not knowing which route he took home.

And following him home would not have prevented an accident.

And how would that have helped if he had veered off into oncoming traffic, hit a family head on and killed them?

The drunk guy who killed my best friend thought he was fine to drive. I'm sure his family was upset that he was arrested too.
You did the right thing.

There were several people there - family members - and you called the cops and had him arrested. Nice job ruining any chance of having a good relationship with your in laws. Hope this doesn't break your marriage up.
