Moms who are widowed, do you classify yourself as a single mother, or a widow?  Like, when someone asks you your marital status, what do you say?

I see there are a lot of moms who are really upset at the posts about not wishing single mothers "happy fathers day", because a lot of people are saying the single mothers made their choices...but the widows are getting mad because they obviously didn't choose to be without a husband.

*I* for one view single mothers and widows in two separate groups, but I am wondering if the widows are grouping themselves into the single mother group, or if they are just assuming everyone else is.

I'm neither and have never been. But I too think of them differently.

I'm not a widow but my mother was widowed young, she was 32, so I was raised by one. I know she referred to herself as a widow. Back then a single mom was a huge stigma.

Which "they" are you referring to?

There have been a lot of posts today about single mothers playing the father role, and a lot of other posters are saying that the single mothers chose the fathers- so it's their fault they are without the dad.

I view it differently. But I'm married. Neither single or widowed.

Yes I do separate the 2.  However, singled or widowed, both are playing both roles.  Many single Mom's didn't choose to be a single parent either, divorced or otherwise.  I really don't understand why this is such a big issue.

Two seperate groups.

The single mother still has help from the father of the kids.

My grandmother was widowed while five of her eight kids were still at home.  She always referred to herself as a widow, never a single mom.
