Mom Confessions Mom Confessions

Since I am having withdrawals from the other post, I figured I would post some fun facts.

The Kennedys redecorated the White House since Mrs. Kennedy thought the furniture was too cheap!

Back in 1961, Jackie Kennedy decided to do a renovation of the White House by replacing the cheap furniture bought by the Trumans with pieces of the White House historical furniture!

Jackie Kennedy was so obsessed with the whole redecorating process, that along with Dorothy Mae “Sister” Parish she started the job right away. She started by reediting several of the family bedrooms and few other rooms. She decided to do several redecorations around the entire house! For instance, she converted the former Prince of Wales suite into a Private Dining Room!

The Kennedys were able to declare the White House a museum, they did this in order to preserve it and they accepted many antique furniture that fitted the White House! She even asked the Eisenhowers to give back the Washington era China they had taken home after leaving office!

Many of the “modern” rooms seen at the White House are all renovated thanks to Mrs. Kennedy’s great sense of decoration. So next time you decide to pay a visit to the White House remember that behind all it's history, the Kennedy era is among it.

This Boy Scout tried to build a nuclear reactor... in his back yard!

David Hahn, a 31 year old man was held in the Macomb County Jails after being caught trying to steal 16 smoke detectors which contained radioactive material!

What’s funny about this story is that back in 1996, Hahn tried to build a nuclear reactor at his backyard! When asked, investigators stated that Hahn was arrested after someone saw him stealing detectors around the apartment complex where he lived and that later on the other detectors were found at his apartment!

Back in the 1990s he learned that smoke detectors have a small amount of a radioactive isotope, and therefore it could help him to continue his evil plan. Why does he have so many open sores in his picture? Possibly because of all the radioactive materials that he was exposed to.

An Australian study found that homework has no academic value!

Here's a fact that might brighten up your day: There's a good chance that homework is worthless. Two Australian researchers published a new book that claims homework for young primary school kids has little to no value related to academic achievement.

Their studies found that homework isn't beneficial for primary school kids, has very limited benefits for junior high kids and reasonable benefits for senior high school kids.

Here's another nugget: They also found that parents getting too involved and controlling in their kids' homework is also not beneficial. They also found that kids would benefit more from higher quality homework rather than lots of repetitive, drill-style homework.

The Changi Airport in Singapore has a four-story indoor slide!

Two slides were built in Singapore's Changi Airport, one is one-story tall and the other is four-stories (12 m) tall! That makes it the world's largest slide inside an airport, a category we're sure is extremely competitive.

The airport advertises that you can reach speeds of up to 6 meters per second, which comes out to be about 13.4 miles per hour. You can claim one ride on the slide for ever $10 you spend inside the airport. You can also claim 5 free rides on your birthday month if you are a member of the airport's reward program.

A robber's body was mummified and used as a mannequin at an amusement park!

Elmer McCurdy was an Oklahoma outlaw whose mummified body was thought to be a mannequin and was used as a prop at an amusement park!

During a filming at Queens Park (Longbeach, California) of a television show, a crew member was moving the mummified body (which was thought to be a wax mannequin) and when the mannequin’s arm broke off, he discovered he was actually moving a human body!

During the medical examination, the Doctor looked at the mummy’s mouth for more clues and he was surprised to find a 1924 penny and a ticket to a museum of crime in Los Angeles! The ticket and archieved newspaper helped the researchers to identify the body as Elmer McCurdy.

Apparently the 'mummy' died from a gunshot wound in the right anterior chest. He was finally buried in Oklahoma on April 22 in 1977, and the state medical examiner ordered that two cubic yards of concrete was to be poured over the casket, so that his remains would never be disturbed again.

A company called Holy Smokes will take your cremated ashes and place them in bullets!

Some people want to be buried in a cemetery, others want to have their ashes spread across an ocean, but some people, such as the founder of Holy Smokes, Thad Holmes, want to have their ashes loaded into 250 shotgun shells and used by their loved ones to hunt animals.

Thad is an avid outdoors man, and so is his son, and they both believe that the best way for his son to remember Thad is to use him once every year to hunt an animal. This simply bizarre idea evolved into a business ran by Thad called Holy Smokes.

Basically, people send the company their loved ones ashes, and in return, the company places the ashes in 250 shells (of the family's choosing) and then sends the shells back to the family to use. This one of a kind business charges $850 for their services.

After just a few months of the business being in operation, they already have a website and have had two different families use their services!

A man escaped a German prison using nothing but a cardboard box!

In what may sound like an attempt to escape prison guards, much like Solid Snake out of the Medal Gear Solid franchise, a 42 year old Turkish man escaped a German prison using nothing but a cardboard box.

The Turkish man agreed to work in a small shop in the prison, at would leave boxes of supplies for a courier to pick up once a week. Well, one day the inmate decided to crawl into one of the cardboard boxes and as usual, the courier picked up the boxes and placed them in the back of his truck.

When the man made it past the prison gates he tore a hole in the tarpaulin that was placed over the boxes! The driver of the truck alerted police whenever he noticed the tarpaulin was flapping in the breeze. The escaped convict presumably had an accomplice outside of the prison, ready to pick him up and drive away!

A dad was photographed for a story about his missing daughter. The daughter showed up in the background!

Michael Dick had seen his daughter, Lisa, in ten years since he separated from his wife. He was determined to find her and began searching. His search led him to Sudbury where Lisa had last been known to be living. Dick's searched reached a dead end there though so the local newspaper published a story on him to see if the publicity would help.

The story contained a photo of Dick and his two other daughters that had traveled with him to Sudbury. Amazingly, Lisa saw the story. It turns out she was still living in Sudbury because she and her mother appear in the background of that very photo of Dick and his daughters that appeared in the article.

Just a few days earlier, Lisa had spoken to friends about wanting to find her father. She called Dick, and he drove back to Sudbury to meet her and her three children. Many coincidences led to one happy ending.

A high school girl figured out the formula for how long paper must be to be folded in half 12 times!

Britney Crystal Gallivan is most well known for finding the maximum number of times that things can be folded in half. While she was a junior in high school, Gallivan demonstrated that a single piece of toilet paper 1200m in length can be folded in half twelve times. This went against the popular belief that the maximum number of times any piece of paper could be folded in half was seven.

She tested the foldability of paper of other lengths and used her empirical data to derive an equation that yielded the width of paper necessary to fold a piece of paper of thinkness t any n number of times. She went on to be a keynote speaker for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Convention and a 2007 graduate of University of California, Berkley. For her equation, check out the source!

1.  "Clipping" is not just an offense in football..  Before they were made by machines, coins weren't perfectly round. They also didn't have reeded (grooved) edges. This made it easy for people to shave off pieces of precious metal. After "clipping" a coin this way, people then illegally spent the coin for its original value. Some people were even put to death for this crime in 17th century London.
