My husband and I have four children.

I am a SAHM.  With 4 children, I have to be.  I could not arrange childcare for all of the kids that wouldn't be too expensive and too restrictive to the hours that I could work.

My husband makes about $40,000 per year at his job.  He works an extra job (a few nights per week) that brings in about $20,000 per year.  We could not get by on the $40k, but with the extra $20k, we are able to live comfortably- 2 cars without a payment, a house, the oldest child starts private school in the fall, a modest week-long vacation every summer.

Yesterday, my mother-in-law told me that if I really loved my husband I would "get down off my high horse and apply for some WIC and foodstamps so that he didn't have to work so hard."  She thinks that we should "give up the fancy lifestyle" that she claims is all about my wants and just receive government assistance so that we can "survive on $40k".  She thinks that I am crazy for expecting him to work 60 hours per week.

What a nut!

(Not going back to change everything, so I'll just explain... These numbers are net incomes- after taxes)

All I told her was that I don't think that it is right for us to expect other people to provide for the children we created.  It isn't as if he is unable to find work.  He currently has the jobs to provide what we need.

Why care what she thinks if it is working for your family?

Right?  She's the kind of obsessed mom who still calls her grown son "baby". :/

Why aren't you the one working a part time job to bring in the extra income??  Your husband is a parent as well and could parent just as well as you do....
