# How to tip?

I'm ashamed to admit I've never learned how to tip properly. Usually I just give people a lot more than im supposed to (according to friends).  How much do you tip at things like restaurants, nail salons, hair salons ect? How do you decide the exact amount and do the math?

Food service/stylists please comment and tell me what YOU prefer!

20% of the total.

Minimum of 15% of the bill is standard

I don't tip at hair salons.

But at restaurants, I start out at 20% then deduct from there depending on service.

15-20% is normal.

figure out 10% and double it

Bill is \$35.22
Move decimal point one place to the left for 10%. \$3.50

Double that amount for 20% and tip is \$7.

15-20%

The math is easy.  If the total is \$23.75 then 10% is about \$2.38, multiply by 2 and tip about that much.  I would round up to \$5.

Why don't you tip at hair salons?

Exactly what these ladies said. Dh and myself are over-tippers. We typically do 20%, but we've been known to do more if the service is exceptional.
