Changing your kids name? Would you do it?

A friend of mine had a little girl who she is fostering. She is about 1 ½ years old or so. She just posted on Facebook that they got the OK to adopt her, and they are changing her name. While everyone else gushed over the new name, I kind of thought it was odd after so long, to just up and change it. While i suppose she's still young enough, she really won't remember what her name is now. What do you think?

Way to take away her identitiy.  At that age, their name is all they really have, that they know.  I think it's wrong and silly.  What are the names?  Old and new?

I don't think at that age, it will be a problem

Maybe they can keep her current first name as her middle name.

If I didn't care for the original name and she was that young, yes. Any older than 2.5 or 3 yrs. of age, then no.

I was adopted at a very young age. I think it finally became finally when I was around 1 or 2. I'm glad my mom changed my name because my birth name was HORRIBLE!! I don't remember that far back so I don't think it will really affect the child too much.

Heck my DD just turned 1 last week and I plan on changing her name (just her middle and last name) but still. It doesn't really matter how old she is. Right now she isn't old enough to decide or really even care. If she was older I would hope they would talk to her about it first though. Is her birth name something awful or just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the family names?
