Is it common to write wills for your children right after birth?

I have not written any wills at all, but I have given my mom a form that says she has my consent for things. I made it when I was in a different state and in college, but still a dependent. How many of you have written wills for your children? And when did you?

I heard if you don't, children will be temporarily put in foster care. I know my fammily would take them if anything happened ( God forbid) to us.
