When it comes in a pill, it is not the same thing that is produced in your body! Most OTC melatonin is derived from animals and synthetics. Stop giving it to your kids! Melatonin is a HORMONE! Would you let them have birth control pills?

Yup.  I actually trust my doctor.  You know all those years of training and all.

I have no problem with an informed consenting adult using it.

My doctor told me to give my 3 month old rice cereal because, according to him, my breastmilk would no longer satisfy her. He also told me to give her water instead of breastmilk if she seems hungry when it's hot out.

The point is- doctors can and do give shitty advice. It's so important as a parent to do your own research and/or seek second opinions.
