I knew I should have paid attention to the damned peanut butter posts.

Dd has a girl in her class with a peanut allergy. Just peanuts. There isn't a peanut ban, but I don't want to pack pb&j's just to be on the safe side. Can I still use almond butter or Nutella instead?

Just check the ingredients. You may want to not do it if it's in a facility tht also processes peanuts. if the label doesn't say specifically peanuts then you're fine. I'm surprised there isn't a ban though. Well I should rephrase, we have to be careful of snacks sent bc snacks are eaten in the classroom but lunch's we don't have to worry about bc kids with allergies have specific tables they can sit at.

I wouldn't, until you know what she's allergic to. Ask the teacher, or her parents.
Peanut allergies can go hand in hand with other allergies too, especially nuts.

That depends on who you ask. It is pretty common for people with a peanut allergy to develop a tree nut allergy and vise versa. But...it is not guaranteed. Also, read up on air born peanut allergy and reactions before you do or don't do anything differently.

Btw- I have a potentially fatal tree nut allergy, so my opinions and advise are not based on paranoia or news hype, but rather 30+ years of dealing with this crap.

pretty sure it'll be ok.

I've never tried almond butter, how is it?

Weird, how did you find out she had the allergy? Email? Your dd? I would check with the teacher.

Yes, you can use any other nut butter.

See if you can contact her parents some how. Glad you're being so considerate and level headed. :-)

Pack your kid a pb and J if she wants it.    By grade school this kid should know to stay away from peanuts and schools I know of don't force the kids to eat by class.
