Teacher's Allergy, Ohio Girl's Service Dog At Odds

Friday August 23, 2013 10:38 AM
UPDATED: Friday August 23, 2013 10:43 AM

The mother of an autistic first-grader who uses a service dog is challenging a decision that the girl must change schools in her southeast Ohio district because her special-education teacher is allergic to dog dander.

Athens schools' superintendent Carl Martin calls it a reasonable solution to balance the rights of the teacher and the student.

Charla Gretz, of The Plains, tells The Columbus Dispatch it would disturb her 6-year-old daughter. She also says the bus ride would be significantly longer, a claim Martin disputes.

An attorney with the Ohio School Boards Association says schools are legally obligated to accommodate the student and teacher. She says that might be harder for a smaller district like Athens with fewer special-education teachers.

Gretz plans to take the issue to the school board.

I saw this today on my Facebook feed!  I wonder if allergy meds would help the woman out....I know some people it doesn't work though.

I think they should move the child.  It is not unfair, but the year has just started and kind of tossing the teacher into another school with such little notice, and disrupting all the other children in that SN class, just isn't right.

Not a great situation but what else can you do?

So what, is this girl supposed to go from school to school until she finds a school in which no one is allergic. The teacher can take some benadryl or claritin and get over it

That's a tough situation.  I would say the girl should switch schools.

I'm assuming it helps keep the girl calm?

Not all people can. My bil is so allergic his eyes swell up, and have swelled shut. He sneezes constantly.
