Posted by Anonymous   + Show Post

I am not on pa but if i was i would still need internet and would pay for it if i had too.

My dd is in the 8th grade. a couple of her teacher do not hand out text book. they told all the students to look at the books online, when they do their homework. so yea sometimes you need internet.

If it is a requirement, the school has to provide the means to use it during class time. Therefore, while accessing the computer is a need, having it at home, is not. Again, how does having HOME INTERNET support life?

IF it is required for school in order for your child to learn then it is a need.

You could do without internet even if the books are online only by using access at places like McDonald's and the library. However you would have to spend gas and time going there so and you only get limited amounts of time at most libraries. Most restaurants with internet you have to purchase items and have limited time so not really free either place.

I would probably make a deal with neighbor and use theirs lol.

Except that if you sit in mcdonald's or krystal or any of those places and don't buy anything, they will ask you leave.

Schools will normally do it for free when you explain your situation.  Otherwise a job might be in order to provide for your child.  I am sure that if you explained that you are destitute and do not even have the money to feed your children, nevermind buy a computer and internet service, the teacher would print the pages.

Do you expect that the government will also provide a free computer to access the internet?

You go to the public library and you print out the pages.  We did that all the time.  You can also use the school library, or a local university library.  There are also many bookstores with internet.  There are a plethora of options for resourceful moms.

well you see my dd don't have the advantage of staying after school or going to the libary or a friend house and being that some of her book are online, how is she suppose do homework, study without text books?

Quoting Val99:

Funny, I made it through a PHD, my daughter made it through an MD, and my son made it through a DVM without home internet.  Libraries are great resources.  I'm sorry you feel like your 8th grader couldn't do what we did through advanced degrees.

You have to pay to print the pages and even at 25 cent a page, that can run up into some money. You are talking about people who cannot afford school lunch spending this money. No, internet is cheaper.

Not sure where you live but my kids go to school 45mins away we do not have a car and public busing isn't in the area of their school they would have to walk 5 miles to catch the closes bus that would drop them 2 miles from home.

The library is next to the middle and high school.

We live in the middle of no where no friends close by in an emergency we do have some one to help but they live off the grid and do not have Internet.

I walk to the "mall" its a shopping center but they call it a mall 3 times a week to collect soda cans to help pay for our Internet.

We get Food Stamps and that is all we get while we search for work.

There are libraries and places you can go for free internet access, including the schools. Have your child stay afterschool and use the computers there if you must.

I agree. Ds is only in first grade and doesn't use the computer yet, but when he gets older i know he will. We have 3 libraries near us, but not nearly enough computers to go around. The wait for one is usually a couple hours. Then you only get 30 mins to a hour on it.

They can make you pay for pencils and paper and even scientific calculators, they can certainly make you spend $ 10 a month on internet.

You think so?  I DARE you to try to live for 72 hours with only that.  No phone (cell or landline), no computer, no internet, no TV or cable, no car, no books, games, crafts, no cleaning supplies, no toiletries, no pets, no hobby items of any kind, no toys for your kids, no medical supplies or medications (no bandaids, no Tylenol, no vitamins), no school or office supplies, no comfort objects (for you or your kids).

It's really easy to be judgemental, but I'll bet you couldn't do what you seem to think others can do.

Quoting Anonymous:

You NEED food, clothing, shelter, water, that's it!

Our one library closes at 6 and people have to make a appointment and only allowed 1 hour. The only kids allowed to use computers at school are the ones in computer class. They are not allowed to stay after school.
