Deuteronomy 30:15–20

15See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. 16If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. 17But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

“… choose life so that you and your descendants may live …”

Elsewhere, the scriptures tell us that “sins of the parents are visited on the children.” Likewise, we are told that the obedience to the word of Lord results in blessings to the thousandth generation. Choices make a difference.

The writer of Deuteronomy calls us to choose to obey the Lord, follow the commands of God, and remain faithful to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Those who do so will know life – life that brings with it blessings and joy. Choosing life not only means life for you in the present generation. It also means life for those who follow. Obedience to God’s commands and steadfastness of faith set the stage for continued life for the community of believers.

This is not only true of ancient Israel. It also remains true for us. Our obedience and faithfulness bring untold blessing not only upon us – in the present. They establish a pattern of life for the next generation. Life now results in life for the future.

So, as the writer of Deuteronomy says, those who choose life now are making a choice for their descendants to live.

Holy Lord, through your Spirit you enable me to choose the life you offer. Lead me to obedience and faithfulness that, through me, the next generation may be blessed. Amen.
