Does unplugging everything save you electricity?

My FIL insists that you have to unplug everything, not just turn it off,  to save electricity. I mean unplugging the toaster, microwave, fans, lamps, and anything else you can think of. How true is this?

Anything that uses a remote control doesn't truly get shut down unless the plug is pulled. It just goes into a sleep mode waiting for you to wait it up with the power button.

However, the electricity it uses is so minuscule as to be ridiculous to worry about.

*edit* WAKE it up, not wait -_-

Yes.

My husband is an electrician, so I think he knows what he's talking about :)

It's true. The little lights and stuff use electricity. They recommend using power strips and flipping the switch.
