Should people with mental illness have kids?

Part of me says no, it isn't fair for them to pass along something like that to kids.  Especially, knowing you have a severe case of bipolar, schizophrenia, severe depression, etc. Even if it is well controlled with meds.  Kids should have to deal with stuff like that.

Then, yet again, it can still happen even if there is no family history (and also it might not be passed on).

But why risk it, when you know how miserable you are (according to a lot of the post I have seen on here)?

Do you think people with mental illness should have kids?  I know we can't control what they do, but what do you think?

yes, becuase  no one has the right to take that away from me.  I am bipolar and a good mother.  I work hard and I stay stable.

There are different degrees of 'mental illness'. For example, my ex (father of my daughter) is autistic. I didn't know until months after we broke up, it was so mild that no one could tell. Yes he kept that from me, and yes my daughter has an increased chance of developing autism.

I don't really have an opinion on this topic though unless my statement says otherwise...

I think it depends on what diagnosis someone has.

I honestly don't know.  I'd have to say yes, but possibly with assistance- depending upon the severity of their illness.

I think you need to educate yourself more on mental illness instead of going through the stigma on mental illness that society places on it. This education includes also realizing that you too more than likely have a mental illness as well.

Breast cancer too, why have kids when it might be passed down?
Or diabetes, that's hereditary.

The term "mental illness" is FAR too broad to even speculate...

It goes with anything and not just mental illness. It depends on the person.

Yes, it can be passed on but like another poster said, a lot can.
