Should I report her? Question of ethics..

A girl I know works at a mental hospital giving out meds to patients. Recently she came over and showed my SO a picture on her phone and asked him to read it--- it was a picture she took of a patient's confidential incident report. She was asking him to read it aloud and make fun of it. I said no before anyone did anything, that I didn't like it because it was sad, not funny.

She went on and on about how this patient has DID and other mental illnesses, and insisted continuously it wasn't due to the girl's upbringing, it wasn't sad, etc.

Um, I don't care WHY the mental illness is there, I think it is COMPLETELY in appropriate and unprofessional . Should I call her place of employment and let them know?

I am hesitant to bring this question up to SO . It Is his best friend's DF. .

yes. absolutely report it. she has a pic on her phone, so they would have hard evidence of misconduct.

Did she share the name of the patient or any identifying information?

I work in child abuse and neglect...we make cringe worthy jokes as a coping mechanism. She may have violated your sensibilities but as long as she didn't violate confidentiality laws she didn't do anything wrong.

When I saw it, I asked her " is that illegal?" and she said yes...so I'm guessing she had enough common sense to delete it. So if she doesn't have it anymore, will she get in trouble? Are they going to take her phone and look at it?

I would, yes. She is breaking the law. And it will be reported anonymously.

Before you do..have your DH ask her to send him the pic...find some reason..because she realizes that she could be in trouble she is going to delete that photo.
