If a paper from school said *update*

"Due back by Friday, September 27th" would you assume it was due before the 27th or that you could turn it in on the 27th?

I ask because my 8 year old son wanted to join art club. He's never wanted anything more in his life. He got an application and it said "due in Mrs. N's classroom by Friday, September 27th.". Well, he wanted to make sure it was perfect, so for the past 2 weeks he'd come home and work on it for hours after school (they had to include an original piece of artwork). He brought it to school with him today and he was beaming. He just knew he'd be accepted.

When I picked him up this afternoon he was bawling. I asked him what was wrong and he said that when he went to turn it in, the teacher told him that they were supposed to be turned in yesterday and she threw it away. I was so sad for him. I want to call the teacher and say something, but I won't if I misunderstood the due date. What would you think it meant?

*update*
Sorry, I forgot I made this post. I called up to the school and spoke with the art teacher. She said she did not throw the paper away, she put it on her desk. He must've just assumed she threw it away. She said he could have it back if he wanted it. My son no longer wants to be in art club, so I didn't bother asking about it. She apologized for the confusion and said she would try to be more clear im the future. So, really I didn't get much accomplished, but oh well.

Right. So he should've been able to turn it in today, correct?

I would take it to mean that it could be turned in on Friday.  I would be meeting with the Principal first thing on Monday.  The woman has a screw lose or doesn't understand what due by means.

Well, I don't normally let him either, but he was working on it daily and wanted to make it perfect, so I was letting him work on it until the last minute.

Call. If that's what the paper said then you did not misunderstand.
