My dd had her first period a few months ago and hasn't had one since. She is ten. Is it normal for it to be sporadic like that at first? Especially since she is so young?

Perfectly normal to be sporadic and have no set schedule.  My daughter has had hers for the last year and four months, and she still has no regular schedule and skips months.

omg yes.  I was so irregular the first few years I got mine that my doc put me on bc to try to regulate it.  actually, nothing regulated it until I had my first kid and went on long term bc.  when I went off the bc 11 years later is when I could chart my cycle.
