So, CM likes PEMDAS a lot and we like to get into tiffs about correct and incorrect answers.

I'll throw a major curve ball at those who always want to be right. This is a medical math problem and I'll give you the equations, lets see how you can follow directions. I have the answer so it's indisputable. Ready??

You're responsible for starting a Diltazem drip, using microtubing, for a 200lb male. He just had a bolus of Diltazem to control his heart rate. Protocol states that you are to mix 20mg in a 150mL bag of D5W and deliver at a rate of 5mg/hr.

1. How many mL must be added to the bag from the vial? Your vial concentration is 125mg/25mL (5mg/mL).

2. How many mL per hour will be delivered?

3. How many drops per minute would be necessary if your pump fails?

Here are your formulas. You figure out how and which order to use them:

Concentration=

medication (mg)
---------
Volume (mL)

Ordered gtts/cc
------------ X ------------
Concentration 1

It's actually extremely easy once you pull out your information.

I'll explain the answers if enough ppl pass on my challenge or just can't get it.

I'm off work. You can't make me think!!!

It is very easy. Our teacher showed us a crazy cool way to figure it out. I loved her. Lol

Short cuts are always fun. I don't know any short cuts for this but even doing it this way is uber easy :))

As long as you can pull out all of the information for your formula, you're golden. Hell, they even let us use a calculator!

Lol I know! That was one of the easier ones he gave us tonight. It's overwhelming when you first learn it.

I just figured we had a lot of know it all mathematicians who I'm certain can follow a basic formula and did a challenge :)

I'll skip that, but thanks.  I'll come back when someone figures it out.

Shit. I haven't had to figure that crap out for over a year. My brain hurts just looking at it. The only thing I have had to figure out since then is which diaper to put on which kid and if I am going to give my toddler strawberries or cherry tomatoes with lunch.
