My almost 6 yr old daughter wrote on her skirt with a pencil but could not give me a reason why. I am not particularly sure if pencil stains though i dont think so, but the point was not about the pencil, the point was her not taking care of her stuff overall.  She got timeout and also had to do a load of laundry (load it, put the soap and start the washer, in the dryer and take it out)  including the skirt and the rest of her uniform.

Sorry, but I think your jumping over board. I don't think she should of wrote on her uniform with a pencil but it's not the end Of the world. Let it go.

I don't see how a time out was beneficial in this instance...

Dido. I would have stopped at the laundry part. But what if she didn't mean to? Are you sure she did it on purpose?

If you've told her not to do it, and she has defied you then I think the punishment is appropriate. But if it's just you expecting your 6 year old to have a mature thinking process, then I think you're setting the bar too high.

exactly! I don't agree with the op punishment. She should take a chill pill!

the point of the time out was for her to come up with a reason other than "I dont know"--if it was an accident, then fine but I wanted some sort of answer.

When my son fell and made a hole in his pants I made him sew them up and do laundry for a week! Just kidding he's 7 and I'm pretty sure my response would have been "don't color/write on your pants"

I used to write on my clothes at that age. Just boredom and because it was the "in" thing. If I were you I would have done a very stern talking to and what her punishment would be next time she did it

I hope you made her put them away too. That's the worst part of doing laundry imo.
