For a lot of instances, it's an appropriate comment.

many people make bad choices, some without even realizing it.

Even more - refuse to acknowledge it.

Hind site is 20/20 so telling someone make better choices is like telling someone get a glass ball and look in the future, not really helpful they are already in the situation they are in.

If every choice you've made in your life has led you to this moment, isn't it true?

With that said it seems kinder to say you need to get a plan together to change what is causing you to struggle. And then commit to it and see it through.

We're all products of our own choices.

You can change what you don't acknowledge. Acknowledge you made a shitty choice and do better.

Just telling someone to "mqke better choices" will not help them at all. Help them figure out how to make better choices. Quit judging before you know the full story. Things are not always black and white and so easy.

Are we all starting out even?

Does everyone come from a good family, with lots of love and support?

Do we all have equal intelligence?

Do we all have equal funding?

Do we all have trouble free childhoods, with no abuse or neglect?

There are so many variables that go into how we develop as people.  Yes, some people make bad choices.  Some people don't or can't see which are better choices, and some people only think they have bad choices in front of them, one no better than another.

Not enough people have empathy or compassion.

It's a decent suggestion in some cases.
Many of the problems people talk about on here are totally related to bad decisions.
