What is your definition of homemade?

Posted by   + Show Post
Just wondering what do you consider homemade?

Anything you make AT home?

Or does it have to use 100% fresh ingredients?

Or somewhere in between????

I disagree.  Frozen pancakes (unless previously made at home, not bought frozen) are not homemade but making them from pancake flour mix is.  Perhaps they're not made from scratch but they are homemade.  If someone says they only cook from scratch that would include pie crust, etc.I do a mix - somethings are from scratch, some are homemade but use canned/boxed ingredients, and some are ready to thaw/cook.  It depends on what I want to make and what I have for time.  I'm making beef wellington tonight.  I do not plan on making the crust or making the pate; I still consider it homemade.

Okay here's my opinion:

Frozen pancakes are not homemade.
Homemade pancake are from scratch. From a box doesn't count.

However homemade chili doesn't have to have 100% fresh veggies. In my opinion you can use canned tomatoes (espicailly during the winter months).

A chicken pot pie is still homemade if you use a pie crust from the box.

Homemade to me:

Making a cake and using flour, sugar, cocoa, bkng soda, eggs, etc. NOT from a box mix. Icing using powdered sugar, cocoa, butter, etc. NOT from a can.

Same with cookies, muffins, etc.

Main dishes using meat, herbs, spices, making sauces/gravies from scratch.

No I dont grind my own flour or churn my own butter...but I do make pasta from scratch, make my own pasta sauce using tomatoes from my garden that we canned ourselves. (same with salsa, relish, pickles, jelly)

Id say somewhere in between: I dont grow my own beef or chicken, but I also dont cook "out of a box". (hamburger helper, mac & cheese, sauces out of jars)

Most everything I make has a recipe I follow. A recipe of ingredients, not just instructions.

For me it is about time and cost.

Making a pie crust from scratch takes more time than its worth, in my opinion.

But making pancakes, biscuits, or waffles doesn't require that much more effort than using a box mix. So I make them from scratch.

A box of pasta costs less than a dollar so I've neer even attempted to make pasta from scratch.

 I like this interpretation.

I will use fresh tomatoes when they are in season. I will make my own pie crust rarely because I hate making pie crust. I always make my pancakes from scratch, along with waffles. =)

Raise your hand if you make all homemade pasta.

There's a difference in homemade and made from scratch. Homemade has a little wiggle room. Chilli with canned tomatoes is still homemade. Pancakes from a mix is homemade, because you did mix it and make them. But making pancakes with your own recipe with flour, eggs, milk etc. would be from scratch. It's really not something you can define in black or white, because everyone has their own ideas about what counts as homemade.

If I make it in my home and it isn't premade then it is home made!

Okay so just put of curiousty,

Would you consider a box of cake mix homemade?

To me, homemade is where I don't use a "box meal" like hamburger helper.  Sometimes it goes beyond that and we make our own pasta and what-not.
