Jeremiah has been pretty stable for about a yr. He gained a ton of weight recently and his meds became less efficient, they upped half his meds 2 weeks ago and is supposed to up the other 2 next week. Today i got a call at work from the school. Now they know only to call me in case of emergency since I just started a week ago. Jeremiah had been hallucinating pretty bad, he took a pencil and bit the eraser off and cut his wrists all up, pushed a teacher (just him, the ED teacher and AP were in the room), threatened to kill himself, throwing chairs etc. They put up with it for hours before calling me and I am suprised they did not call 911 IMO. At 1:45 I headed to the school. When I got there I knew he was manic and hallucinating still and did not feel safe leaving with him. We called his Psych office, who in turn called CIT officer for me. They came and transported Jeremiah to the ER (the one we have to go to is in the city 1hr away, there is no direct admit for the Psych Center), we sat in the ER for about 4hrs until they said PBH (Psych center) was not going to admit him and to follow up with his psych tomorrow. My son was so upset, he says his meds are not working and he can feel himself slipping away. He cried so hard on the way home. He even asked me to stop at our church since its youth group night to have healing prayers prayed over him for the hallucinations, so we did. I got him home, and his little sister laid with him in her bed and played with his hair until he fell asleep. I have been in tears all evening. How can I keep him safe when no one will follow the safety plan set in place by myself, the school and his psych Dr. I am just thankful that he is on sleeping medication and I will not have to worry through the night that he will harm himself. Tomorrow we are contacting psych again to adjust his meds or I am finding a new psych with admitting permission elsewhere even if I have to travel the 3 hrs to Indy. Like I said, really no point in this just needing to talk and everyone here is asleep.

Update 11/6 9am

Just waiting on his psych to call me back, they are not happy he was not admitted last night. They said i should not have to deal with an unstable child needing a med adjustment with self-harming tendencies and hallucinating.

11/6 4:30pm

Okay, so Dr is not admitting him but doing some major med changes. He cannot return to school until Monday, so I had to call out for tomorrow. He is calm and stable now, but I have been told to take him back to psych hospital if he starts to rage again.

11/13 7:40am

So Jeremiah started back to school on Monday. They changed his meds by tapering him off slowly of the risperdol and adding Abilify and a higher dose of depakote. He did well over the weekend, but at home there are less triggers. Apparantly Monday was horrible come the mid morning. Here is the email from his teacher, I am pissed because they are referring him once again to probation, which does nothing for him, he does not have the capability in his mind to understand that probation is a bad thing. Juveniles on probation have a curfew of 7:30pm with out parents (he goes no where anyway), cannot have a firearm (duh!) has to pass drug test (they do not test him bacause he has never done them) Then they charge me $50 mth plus court fees, so who really pays in this situation?

 Kim,

I apologize. I am just now getting to work in my office. I want to keep you in the loop in order that you know what is taking place at school and so that that you can share with Amanda.

This is a copy of the incident report from today. We thought that the day was off to a great start, as Jeremiah appeared to be pleased to be back and very anxious to help with Veterans Day affairs. He did a nice job this morning. We all complimented him. When 4th period started, the behaviors started to escalate.

10:55 – Jeremiah refused to go to 4th (LA). He joined Mr. Prater in the ED room. Jeremiah then left ED room w/o permission for a drink. He attempted to sleep instead of working on LA work/quiz with Mr. Prater. Jeremiah stated 4 times, "I will not take this fucking test". He continued laying on floor attempting to sleep. Jeremiah finally guessed on the test after Mr. Wilson stopped in to encourage him to complete work.
1:00 – Jeremiah refused to go to 6th (US History). He stated that he needed to "get his bearings". He also stated that he was not going to blow up, but just in case he did, he wanted to be downstairs. Mr. Prater discussed the importance of being in class. Mr. Prater gathered USH work for Jeremiah. Jeremiah refused to complete work. He was a classroom distraction, as four other students were using the room at that time. Classroom was cleared of all students but Jeremiah. Students displaced to the NMS office.
1:15 - Jeremiah was running around the room, refusing to go to class or do work. He was laughing as Mr. Prater continued to direct him to be seated. Mrs. Morgan readied AP room to be used for Jeremiah. While I was out of the room, Jeremiah repeatedly said "fuck, fuck, fuck..." to Mr. Prater. He stated that he was not hurting anyone and the world did not blow up. Jeremiah then threw markers across the room toward Mr. Prater, used the markers as "light sabers" to mockingly stab Mr. Prater "light saber to the heart" and cut his head off.
1:26 - I came in to report that the AP room was ready for JM. He announced that he was ready to go to class. I escorted JM to class.

1. Conference with Jeremiah, Mr. Prater and Mr. Wilson
2. Assigned 1 day AP 11/12/13
3. Mom notified by email
4. Probation referral to be sent to Wells County Probation Department.

I will be in touch with you to let you know how tomorrow goes. Please feel free to call or stop by anytime to see Jeremiah.

11/13 3:33pm

Email from his teacher today

He refused to complete his social studies assignment today.  He was asked several times to stop humming during 7th period and would so he had to be removed (he was interfering with everyone’s learning).  He seems calmer but more defiant on this medication.

11/14 7:47am

I emailed the AP today, we tend to keep in touch via email as much as possible.
I am home today for the most part, taking my van to get looked at at 9am and then have to pick my mom up from FT Wayne later today. I also wanted to find out if you actually sent a referral to probation, I need something in place if you did, I am very afraid the judge will make him a ward of the state as he threatened last time. The other option I would like to discuss with you is possibly moving Jeremiah to Crossraods day school in Ft Wayne, but I cannot afford the transportation to and from, so if there is a way that the school could do this since its quite obvious we are exhausting all our options locally and Jeremiah still has a right to an education. I can not pull him to home school, so either moving him on the schools dime or having a home bound daily teacher may be an option. I am just not sure the Norwell school setting is set up to deal with him during his bad days, and honestly I do not think many of the staff is even educated enough in special needs (or at least his special needs) to deal with Jeremiah. Maybe we can set up a meeting to go over some alternate ideas, have them set up so if I have to go in front of a judge I have a few plans in place, and he can see that I am exhausting all available options and just not sitting on my rear allowing things to happen without being proactive. Next week I have off Monday and Thursday, Thursday I will be picking Jeremiah up at 1:30pm for a 2pm appointment. On the 26th Jeremiah has an appointment with his psychiatrist for a medication review, I would like to know if you could maybe write her a little summary of your thoughts on his med changes or observations to give her a better idea of what is going on at school since he is like night and day between home and school. I know you may not have answers for me right away, but could you please respond to this email just letting me know you received it please.
Thank you,

Thank you, our mental health system, especially for kids with many mental health issues, really sucks. We have to jump through so many hoops to get them help. Honestly as much as i hate placing him, I know his meds can be adjusted, he can be kept safe at the same time and if the meds are not working they will see the reactions themselves. Seems like such a simple fix to a huge problem, but I have to fight for it.

It is very hard, when your child is telling you that he is being told to hurt himself and he has to listen to the voices and you know an adjustment in his meds that previously worked will probably work after a week or 2 and there is nothing as a parent you can do it kills me.

May I ask what he's on meds for?

I don't know your whole story but this makes me so upset. I am always so disappointed in the mental health care of this country. I hope he can be admitted or treated properly real soon.

Sure can Jeremiah has been diagnosed with Bipolar, early onset schizophrenia (when he is an adult these diagnosis will probably become Schizo-affective disorder), ODD, ADHD, SPD and Aspergers. He takes Risperidol, Intuniv, Depakote and Trazadone

If you search Jeremiah in NC group you can follow Jeremiah's story for the past 5 yrs on here, and recently in this group.
