My brother is getting out of prison in May

And he will be labeled as a sex offender. It sounds terrible but I really feel like he doesn't deserve it. He didn't deserve to go to prison to begin with. He was on a file sharing site and shared pornography and downloaded some and some of the pictures of females may or may not have been under age. There was NO kiddie porn at all on his hard drive. His wife divorced him and is refusing to let him or his family contact his son or his stepkids who we have always treated like they were his. I'm scared for him when he's freed. What do you think? What do you think about sex pffenders in general? Alot of offenders end up homeless with no job and their families abandon them. Our family has and will continue to support him. And the reason he was convicted I think was because he refused a lawyer and to defend himself. He believed in the system. The porn was found on his laptop when he consented for a search of his vehicle. He lives in Texas and is Hispanic. Getting pulled over and searched is normal the closer you get to the border and the less white you look.

****EDIT*****

This post was really a test for me to see how people would react to my brother when he is released. The majority of the replies have reinforced my fear for him. The biggest issue that people on this site and in reality have, is that they are uneducated on sex offenders and already have prconceived notions and ideas without anything real to back it up. That also goes with police and court procedure. That is the most depressing part for me. Anywho, thank you for the replies both good, bad and accusatory, it helped me lose my faith in humanity that much more! Well, except for the good, understanding ones. A grain of hope is all that you need to get through the dark.

I'm sorry. That sounds like a really dumb reason to be labled a sex offender. Lots of people look at porn. This is kind of scary really. Poor guy.

He wouldn't have gone to jail if there was legal porn on the computer. Believe what you want but it was probably on there and just won't admit to it.
I would divorce my husband too if he had traces of child pornography on his computer.

I know. I hope others will see it that way but getting past the label is almost impossible.

I know you and your family are devastated but chances are good that if they labeled him, he needs to be labeled. It may be a blessing in disguise for your family. My son is being labeled and now they are trying to dismiss all the cases except the thefts and if they take that label, my chances of getting him the help he needs drops to almost nil. If they drop the label, he will be released into society in november and I will not have any right to force him to get the help he needs.

As it stands now, the label gives me the leverage to have him deemed incapable of living in society and therefore putting him in a safe place.

something doesn't sound right. Why did he think he could defend himself? They wouldn't waste their time for everyday porn.

Well they must have had some sort of evidence to link him to a child pornography crime. They can't just put a guy in jail for nothing anymore.
Why on earth would he not get a lawyer?

I understand your point of view but I don't agree. If he needed a label it wouldn't be that. If any thing porn addict maybe?

My brother is listed as a Sex offender from when he was 18 for being with a girl who said she was 16. she had a fake id and her parents and friends went along with it. they were together for 3 years and gotten engaged.one of her friends got jealous and turned him in Cus she was really only 13. Now 20 years later he can't get a job and his kids were taken from him.

some of the females looked 14 to 16, and he honestly believes you don't need a lawyer if you have done nothing wrong. I don't think he would have went to jail aside from the sheer volume of media on his computer and he's in Texas and refused a lawyer.
