How did you not realize that you have to pay child support until they are 21?

My kids turned 18 last month. I didnt get the child support check which is weird. I called my ex to see if everything was okay...he said he didnt have to pay child support because they were 18 now. I told him to speak with his lawyer because you have to pay child support until they are 21.

How can you live in a state with these laws for your whole life and not know this?

ETA: The age of majority here is 21...that means they are still minors until then

obviously he didn't read his paperwork very well.   Unless he is raising hell about it, what's the big deal that he didn't know?

The state mine went through was 19 or graduating from high school. Which ever came first.

Many states its 18 and then extends to 21 if they are in college.

it is different in different places... MOST states end child support when a child turns 18, and many that do pay after age 18 will only pay after 18 if they are still ACTIVELY in high school.

In many states it's 18 or high school graduation, whichever is later so I can see why he would assume that but he really should know what his paperwork says. I think New York is one that's 21 (which I don't think is right btw unless they are still living at home & in school).
