How do you feel about plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments like laser hair removal?

Biting the Bullet on This 'Embarrassing' Beauty Treatment Changed My Life

by Maressa Brown

woman getting laser treatmentLet's be honest: New Year's resolutions are often linked to how we feel ... and look. Too bad we have such a screwed up perception of beauty making things so much harder. Not only do we feel like we have to look like women who are often airbrushed, but we're often too proud to "resort" to plastic surgery or other cosmetic treatments. We look at celebs who admit to it and think what they're doing is ridiculous, superficial, unnecessary, easy to overdo and end up like Wacko Jacko or Joan Rivers.

Plus, shouldn't we all be embracing our natural beauty? Isn't it embarrassing to admit to having to get something about your appearance cosmetically altered? But let me tell you ... when it comes to something like unwanted facial hair, it's a whole different ballgame.

Before I was diagnosed with genetic, PCOS-like hormone imbalance, I was still chalking up my unsightly, dark lady fuzz to my hairy Russian Jewish roots. (No pun intended.) My girlfriends and I would joke about it in high school and cope by making group outings to the local spa to see Dana, our favorite esthetician who would wax our brows, lips, chins, sometimes sideburns. But the more I'd go, the more it seemed like I had to go ... In college, I was introduced to threading, and for years, I was going bi-weekly, feverishly plucking inbetween. That is, until I made one of the Best Decisions of All Time.

A couple of months ago, I started going to my doctor for laser hair removal, and the results are totally blowing my mind. And in turn, I feel like I have my life back.

More from The Stir: 12 Beauty Secrets We Refuse to Spill to Our Men

For example, in the past, I've been out running errands and walked by a mirror at the mall or glimpsed in my visor mirror in the car and noticed peering back at me frightening, dark hairs protruding from or just underneath my light skin! Hello, gross and mortifying. And whoops, if I was sans tweezers, I'd freak until I could figure out a way to remove on the go ... "Oh, just put on a little makeup" used to be my mom's refrain, but that's not enough when you're feeling so self-conscious. Now, because I'm actually getting results, I don't have to worry about that. It's a huge stress reliever.

I'm saving money, because I'm not running to get threaded as often as I had before. I feel more confident getting close with my husband without checking in the makeup mirror. My makeup goes on nicer, and my skin is actually looking better, because turns out that's a positive extra bonus from the treatment!

If you couldn't tell I am so over-the-moon for having done the "superficial, vain" thing, because it really has changed my life for the better. But I'm not alone. As I found out when talking to friends while writing another beauty story, lots of women are forking over our hard-earned cash for it. We don't always tell our partners where the hair is that we're having removed -- or tell them at all! But we all agree it's so worth it. So why not own it? After all, there should never be any shame in doing something that makes life happier, simpler, and, well, smoother.

I would love to do laser hair removal for my upper lip and underarms. I see no issue with it.

I would also love to get a boob job some day.

I have no issue with them. I've done laser hair removal treatments on my lip and chin before.

I would love to get laser hair removal. I also want a mini tuck and bigger boobs. lol I am for it as long as you dont completely change what you look like. Tweaking a few things to make yourself feel better is really not a big deal imo.

I'm fine with it. It comes with its potential risks, but if it makes someone feel better  and they can afford it then go get it! I haven't had any. I will be getting a dental implant soon though so that's a cosmetic procedure just for the sake of my teeth looking better.

I wouldn't mind that hair removal  because I hate shaving lol but I'm not even a candidate for it. Supposedly you have to have darker/thicker hair for it to work well. I don't have as much body hair as your average person, and it's light so I guess I will embrace it! :p

1 mom liked this

I had to reschedule my botox appt. for today due to the snowstorm in the Northeast.  4 times a year, every 3 months.  Just enough so I don't have to use concealer to cover wrinkles.  My face looks like it's 10 years younger : )
