I was hoping that we could all compile ideas so that even those of us who didn't have issues could learn too.

It's a way of helping each other. I wasn't being a bitch

Perhaps saying that in your original post would help.

You absolutely did not sound like you were planning on helping, rather, it seemed like finger pointing.

I stopped focusing so much on gifts and started focusing on the family time. 

They each get one big gift (about $50-$100) and then one smaller gift and then we take a weekend over New Year's at a rental cabin. I have found they like this much better than the stress that was caused by me trying to stuff gifts under the tree.

If there is not enough money, there is not enough money. One year probably won't change much. Unless they are finishing school and getting a better job this year.
