Japanese chin. Omg...best dogs ever.
If you want something with a little less grooming and more energy, try a pug/be able (puggle)! They're great for kids who are a little rougher.

Beagles are good, but they're closer to 25-30 lbs.

There's a lot of small dog breeds that are good with kids but it depends more on the dog and how its treated. I have a jack Russell mix and a mini pin mix and bothb of them are great with my kids. Our jack Russell mix is my dd's dog and even sleeps with her at night. Shes very protective of the kids

I had a yorkie for 18 year s and he was the sweetest little dog in the world but I am more afraid of big dogs

I have a pug he's 22 lbs and awesome with kids.
I also have a morkie puppy that's 3lbs and really sweet with the kids he's expected to be around 6lbs.

People will tell you different things.  A lot of people say little dogs shouldn't be around kids, but I have an 18 month old, a 9 year old, and an almost-11 year old as well as two chihuahuas.

The black dog is the best with my 18-month-old.  She's also a pup.

I think pugs are good with small children. French Bulldogs, too.

Imo mixed breeds are best. We have a maltese/shih tzu and a maltese/yorkie. Both are good with the kids.

The shih tzu mix really excels. She seems to really understand about ages and development. If a baby grabs her fur to stand up she stays absolutely still, no noise. If a toddler does it she cries till rescued. If an older kid plays to rough she barks at them.
She loves to play. When my son was an infant she'd run in circles around him to make him laugh.
