They Called DHS!! WTF??? UPDATE

I had my baby boy on the third. We had a follow up appointment with a new ped yesterday. Our old ped retired last month so we needed a new one.. I'm breastfeeding; he eats every 2hrs, latches well, feeds about 15min-20min on each side, and has been having more than target diapers. Basically he's doing wonderfully nursing according to lactation specialists and the hospital staff.. He has lost 12% of his birth weight so slightly higher than average but my milk just came in yesterday.

Anyway enough of the back story. The ped told us that we needed to supplement with an ounce of formula after every feeding ( 8-14oz a day) and to make another appointment the next day. The amount of formula seems excessive to us and that it would seriously interfere with milk production. We stated this to the ped and that with all due respect we would be taking our son to another doctor for a second opinion. They called DHS! What kind of doctor does that because we choose to get a second opinion on OUR childs care??? We didn't refuse care we just want to speak to another ped for fuck sake that's our right as parents!

Update: We had our appointment with the new ped today and he agreed that the other ped was pushing for to extreme of a treatment plan for our son and that he was not in any danger because of his weight loss. He is up 5 ounces in the last 2 days without supplementing of any kind! The doctor expects him to be back at his birth weight by 2 weeks old but did mention it's not at all uncommon for a baby to take 3 weeks to get back to birth weight. We are happy with the new ped and the health coach they have on staff was very helpful to speak with and guide me toward resources in regards to breastfeeding..

I have learned with doctors.. just say "oh okay..." and if you want a second opinion, go get one. Dont tell them you are.

Yeah, because they know they're full of shit and don't want to lose money when the other doc tells you so.

Make sure you find and stay with a pedi ASAP. It's your right to get a second opinion, but now that dhs is involved you're going to be watched like a hawk. So you better make sure a pedi is following your newborns progress. I also agree with you on the Breast feeding. Supplementing is not needed right now. Good luck. Hopefully dhs will fuck off.

This.

I'd have said ok will do and walked out letting them think I was going to take their advice and then I'd find another pediatrician.

This happened here in ca, the Dr doesn't know if you really will take him to get a second opinion or not. If you do what you should you have nothing to worry about. It's on the Dr since he is a mandated reporter.

this, doctors already have their minds up before they even talk to you, it is in your best interest to patronize them with a smile and nod.
