Why do people think it's okay to talk to my daughter without permission?

My daughter had a recital at preschool today. She's 4. She wore a party dress to it and I took her to the grocery store with me on my way home.

I was getting something and she was halfway down the aisle. There was some random middle aged woman talking to her. I started to walk over and I hear her saying "what a cute dress, you look very pretty".

Not to sound unappreciative or rude, but when did it become okay to speak to random children without their parents. I get that she had good intentions but things like this conflict with safety lessons that I give her.

Anyone else feel like this?

If someone complimenting your child is your biggest problem, count your blessings.

If you don't want her in the position to have to speak to other people without you always keep her at arm's length.

Well, if you didn't leave your kid alone halfway down the aisle, you might not have this issue.

People love kids..you are making a mountain out of a molehill and talking about your child more like she's your possession than your child!

My kids stay closer to me than that and if anyone talks to them they look at me first before they respond. We are stopped by people every time we go somewhere.

No I don't feel that way because I'm not a helicopter mom.

whaaaattttt??  Your 4 year old was several feet away from you in a public place.  Maybe if you kept her close to you, you woudln't have to worry about strangers talking to her.   I often smile and speak to little kids, especially if they are with their parents.  It is called being social and teaching the chld to socialize.

I would have told her she had a pretty dress too and asked her where the fuck her mom was.  But not in those words :)
