What do you tell your children when the family pet dies?

When I grew up my dad use to tell me that my animals ran away, but I think some of them died idk maybe I should ask lol.

So do you tell them that they died & it's apart of life, or they "ran away"?

I'd tell them it died. Children need guidance in grieving.

Fortunately, aside from fish, we haven't lost a pet yet. When we do, we'll be honest and tell them it died.

We don't lie to our kids.  If a pet dies, we explain they died.

I tell them they died. We also used to raise meat cows so they fully understand where their hamburger comes from lol. They get that nothing lives forever.

I just tell them they died. They know that death is part of life.

Death is part of life. Abandonment shouldn't be. I will explain the truth. My father did the "run away" line and I kept looking for them, thinking they were lost and scared and my parents didn't care.

I tell him the truth. He was 4 when our dog was euthanized and we've been honest the entire time.

I tell him the truth. We had a ferret die this last year, it was hard for him. Learning to grieve is important for a child.
