Raising the minimum wage would be a great idea. If companies and retailers weren't allowed to raise their prices for goods and services at the same time.
If the minimum wage is raised then places of business will have to pay all of their employees more. They won't allow their profits to decrease so this means they will raise the prices on goods.
No they don't have to but they will. Can you really see places like Wal-Mart (or other large department stores), McDonalds (or other restaurant chains) and Citgo (or other gas stations) letting their profits decrease because they have to pay employees more? It won't happen.
And while this will slightly help people who currently make minimum wage, it will seriously hurt those who are salaried and/or making slightly above minimum wage.
So basically it will cause even more people to spiral closer to the poverty line, causing more families/people to need public assistance.
What we need is for there to be stronger/stricter regulations on retailers raising their prices.
For example, a store that made 14 billion in annual profits last year shouldn't be allowed to raise prices just because they are concerned they'll only make 13 billion this year because they had to raise salaries.
