Donated School Supplies

Every year in August, lots of churches around here, the Salvation Army, etc., have school supply drives to collect items to give to low - income kids. As a middle school teacher, I see these kids bring their donated supplies and break the pencils, tear up the notebooks, etc. Not all of them are like that, but I'd guess at around 75 percent are destructive of their donated supplies. It's like they think no one they know had to spend their money to buy them, so they don't care.

I guess teaching has made me a bit jaded when it comes to things like this. No one wants a poor innocent child to go without. . . But I guess I can't sympathize anymore when those "poor innocent" children destroy what's been donated to them. Seems to me it does more harm than good in the long run because they learn to not appreciate.

maybe the items are accidently getting ripped?? why would you assume they do it on purpose?  thats ridiculous!

things get worn out and destroyed over time, not always on purpose.

All kids do that. And howcdo you know who got donated supplies or not or are you just assuming that because YOU think they are poor that their supplies are donated.

How in the world would you know if the items were donated or not?

Sounds like their parents need to step up and punish that behavior.

That's funny since your OP says they bring them to school.
