Is it ok for people of average or higher intelligence

to have a relationship with someone whose IQ puts them just barely in the intellectually disabled(edit - not mentally retarded, my bad) category? Is it taking advantage?

What attracted you to him?

Quoting JP-StrongForTwo:

My stbx is mentally retarded. he took advantage of me, and often. mental retardation doesnt make the person. even without MR, he would still be an ass.

i think it is very possible for a person of average or higher intellegence to be with someone with MR, or other disability.

if there is mutual love and respect.

um no.  There's nothing wrong with it.  but personally I would never do it.  People who have low intelligence annoy me, I have no patience for it.

If a borderline mentally retarded person is able to have a relationship with an average/smart person, then they've got something going right. I hear plenty of women of average intelligence complaining about how stupid the men in their life are...
;-)
Also, if a "smart" person is willing to have a "relationship" with a person who is borderline mentally retarded, doesn't that take them down a few notches in the "smarts" department?

I saw this before. It was called "I Am Sam" and "Forrest Gump."

I have a hard time understanding what they would have in common. For me, finding someone with equal intelligence was important.

Is this in general or toward the op? I think op is just asking what others think not that she hasn't summed up an opinion herself.

I would think that it is very possible for a smarter person to love someone who is not as smart as they are.

Quoting Anonymous: Moral.

Quoting Bluerose1482:

Are you asking from a moral stand point or a legal one?
