Here's a rule of thumb you need to keep in mind: using a traditional name and butchering the spelling does not make it new!! Naming your child Alisabexth and pronouncing it Elizabeth does not make you look creative or intelligent. On the flip side, taking a normal spelling and completely changing the pronunciation (ie: Irene, pronounced Eye-Ron-ee) is equally as lame.

If you really want a unique name how about picking up a few pieces of classic literature, mythology or folklore and choosing a name with some historical significance. For instance, I once knew a little girl named Danae, taken from Mythology. It's a beautiful, unique name that is spelled correctly.

That's my two cents. You're welcome.

Agree. My DH has a non traditional name spelling. It's just embarrassing professionally for him. Made his mom look dumb.

We named our second child Alice.  My husband suggested we change the spelling to Alyse.  No.

If it is phonetically correct I don't care. I've had students with a varierty of spellings. Proper nouns don't have only ONE proper spelling. ::shrugs:: It's the names that are NOT phonetically correct that look ridiculous.

That's what we are doing. We are going to spell whatever names we chose correctly but we are looking for unique....but not to far out there names. So far we've chosen Kaia for a girls name because it's not unheard of but it's also not heard regularly.
