Mom Confessions Mom Confessions

parents demanding money from their children

My mother called the other day to tell me she needed $200. Apparently she wasn't going to be able to add anything to her huge savings account for the month of March and wanted me to solve that problem for her.
Between investments, cash savings and retirement accounts she is set for life. Plus she works part time.
She insisted that I should support her because (ignoring my heartbreaking childhood) she's given me everything I need. Plus, she believes I am loaded (I'm not) and should therefore fund her savings account when she cannot.
Thoughts?

Yeah, she would be hearing a hot no from me.  I don't feel like children "owe" their parents for anything, they didn't ask to be here.  It's our job to raise them and take care of them.

Um no! if she was short on money that would be one thing, this however is not a neccesity! I honestly would not be helping.

I would laugh at her and then hang up.

I get pissed when we have to give money to my MIL...who has nothing (due to her own fault).  I sure as heck would be pissed if my mother or MIL asked for money and didn't need it!

It is not our job as children to support our parents...although I think sometimes that is the only reason some people have kids...

In your instance, I probably wouldn't give it to her.

But in my own life, I would. I have no qualms giving my parents money.

I gave her the $200 but have ignored her calls and didn't celebrate my birthday with her since. It's been 2 weeks. I love her but don't know how to make sure this doesn't become a regular thing.

Me? We work so hard for what we have and really have no extra.
