I really don't care about my kid's grades....So does that make me a terrible parent?

My kids came home with their report cards.

So I asked them....

1. Did you pass, or do you need to do it (the class) over again?

2.  Did you put forth your best effort?

3. Did you learn anything?

I told them that:

1.  rarely does any one remember all the grades that they've gotten through out their schooling.

2.  I would rather that they fail with diginty and learn from the class than to take am easy A class.

While I kind of agree with what you're saying I still take an interest in his grades. Whether or not I agree with the grading system, it exists...so I care how he's doing based on it.

I don't know if it makes you a terrible parent but it's different from my standards.

Yes. Yes it does.
It's time to get involved.

I'm 30, and still remember grades I got as early as 4th grade. Anyway, I get what you're saying but I don't agree. I also don't think it makes you a bad parent, however your seemingly lack of involvement might.

If you don't care about their grades how do you expect them to?

I think while yes, you should want your kids taking harder classes than just an easy pass, you shouldn't teach them to run before they can walk. Being ok with them failing a class simply because it is harder is teaching them to set themselves up to fail..and to be ok with failure. There needs to be a happy medium.

Do your kids think that school isn't very important?

It's not that I am NOT involved.  If they need supplies, I get them for them.  If they need help studying for an exam, I will quiz them.  Yes, I look over their assignments.  Yes, I check their teacher's blogs. But ultimately, THEY are the ones who need to do the work, to take the tests and quizes, to create the projects.  They earn their grades, not me.

School sets their path for life. You should encourage and push them to strive for the best IMO.

Do they care about school? What's your highest level of education?
